Hi Owen, strange times, not just for our sector but for the country as a whole, how did you find the lockdown period yourself?

For the first few weeks like most people, I was biting my finger nails at the thought of the whole world crashing and taking Digital Plus with it. During these first few weeks, I had got my head down to plan how I thought this pandemic would affect our business. Whilst doing this, I began to see it has an inspiring moment by looking at this as a fresh start, we had the positive benefit of twenty years trading and a very loyal customer base on which we had concentrated on providing the best service to for many years. With this in mind, my thought process was that when our clients work returned, so then would ours. Keep positive is what I kept telling myself!

With the country having ground to a halt somewhat, have you ever experienced anything like this before?

We had experienced the 2008 recession and had learnt that by helping our clients through these difficult times we had to improve our communication and product offering, whilst giving the best advice to try to save them money. This cemented our relationship with our customers as they had someone they could turn to.

The 2020 pandemic feels to be a whole lot different to 2008, we have continued over the years to keep in place the ethos of better communication, product and advice but have seen the struggle of many companies trying to restart their business in a slow marketplace take its toll on overall spend. 

We believe that things will not return to normal (whatever the new normal ends up being) for a good few years to come, but in the meantime we will pay even greater attention to our customer’s needs and maintain the higher service and product knowledge that is required to keep new and existing clients trusting in Digital Plus to deliver their success.

Now the government is lifting the lockdown (depending on what that looks like for us all) what do you think our customers will be looking for from a Large Format Printer?

We have been printing a lot of Covid 19 safety products for our clients, which has included branded sneeze screens, floor graphics, window graphics and outdoor promotional signage to keep their staff and customers safe. Now we are beginning to see this type of work dropping off due to business’s having recently opened. The new requirement for our customer will begin to turn to promotion to enable a return back to pre-lock down turnover. 

We supply a vast range of products to aid this return to normality and are well versed at providing solutions in helping businesses promote themselves using large format printing onto a wide range of materials. We also offer an installation service to take the stress out of how and where these graphics are to be displayed and will always give the best advice in order to make their message or promotion as engaging as possible.

How have your staff responded to the lockdown?

We have helpful and professional staff which I am very proud of.  They always do their best, making sure that our clients are serviced to the high standard at which we aim for. While it has been a stressful time for all (which includes our personal lives) the pulling together and the determination to carry on being one the best large format printing companies in the UK means the future looks bright in spite of the hardship that a lot of business are facing. (You can meet the team here)

If you could offer one word of advice to the industry right now what would that be?

Keep focused and you’ll learn quickly.

In all things we try to find a positive outlook however difficult at times that may be, if you could take a positive experience from what has happened, what would that be?

The most positive thing I would say, would be that our clients have continued to trust in what we do and believe we can deliver their brief however small or large. This has come from our members of staff who have, over the years shown a commitment in delivering a perfectly finished product, be it a wall graphic or a poster. Our foundations are strong as a team and I have full confidence in knowing that anyone using Digital Plus will see the caring nature of our people and our strength in the quality of our ideas and what we produce.

If you had one personal goal, what would it be?

I would say, and I know this may sound like I need to get a life, but I love my work and love to see the graphic projects that we have delivered for some of the biggest companies in the UK finished and displayed. To see the original concepts and hear the conversations when the project is but an idea on paper, turn into stunning displays always amazes me even to this day. The jewel in the crown for me is the global recognition we have received in winning several printing awards which makes me just want to carry on. I may retire when I’m ninety

As Digital Plus are currently in lockdown due to the current situation in the UK, we thought this would give us some time to introduce you to some of the newer members of staff at Digital Plus.

In the last 18 months we have changed a few key members of personnel as we try to work smarter and deliver a better experience for our customers. The first of the newer recruits (who in fairness has been with us for over a year now) is Lucy

We sat her down (virtually of course) to ask her a few questions.

Q: What’s your background?

A: Initially, I have been in customer service and sales roles. Prior to Digital Plus I worked as a buyer for a rival print company.

Q: What do you do at Digital Plus, was does it entail?

A: I am an estimator. I produce quotes based on a client brief and requirements. I often need to discuss with clients what they’re wanting to make sure the quotes are appropriate. I quote for the majority of project work within the business and really enjoy this aspect of the role. I source all specialist items required for the projects handling a variety of external. I also handle work end to end, from handling the brief, quoting, booking jobs in and even handling couriers and collections!

 Q: What initially drew you to the role at Digital Plus?

A: I wanted to stay within the large format printing sector but wanted to change the role I had. Estimating seemed a great career change, also Digital Plus is a great place to work and knew this would be the case through my interview experience.

Q: Is this your first taste of the world of printing?

A: No, through handling the buying at a rival company I had a good knowledge of the products I would be working with at Digital Plus.

Q: What have you learned so far in your time at Digital Plus?

A: Patience, attention to detail and how customers vary dramatically based on needs and requirements, no job is the same!

Q: What do you enjoy most about the role?

A: I enjoy the large quotes and projects. It is great seeing these quotes and projects come to fruition. Also, when a customer is happy with their goods, I get satisfaction from that. I also like that I have built relationships with customers and can get to know them properly, its great to talk about family and normal life as well as work!

Q: What is your biggest challenge?

A: Patience but it’s getting better

Q: Which of Digital Plus’s products/services interests you the most?

A: I think they are all interesting for different reasons. I particularly like projects because you can see the items and graphics in situ when they have been installed

Q: What makes Digital Plus different to other Large format digital printers?

A: We are always looking at our pricing ensuring that we are as competitive as possible, we are hungry for the work and work really hard to get it. We have a large knowledge base between a number of employees (meet the rest of the team here). We will always endeavour to meet client’s needs whether that’s timescales or advice. We have great relationships with our customers and love it when clients are happy with their orders!

Q: Tell us a little about what you like to do outside of work

A: At the moment its lockdown so not much. But when its not such strange times I like the gym, seeing my family (particularly my nephews) and seeing friends. I also like shopping, reading, watching tv and cleaning – strange I know!

During the past year, our digital printing team has grown, with 7 new recruits across different departments. We caught up with Sales Manager, David Brisk, to chat to him about this growth and what’s been achieved over the last 12 months:

What have been your highlights this year?

I’d have to say the introduction of fresh faces into our digital printing team, including sales and account handlers, and additions to the projects and production team.

This has been great for the team and has really boosted the energy of the whole business. We continue to be a very diverse company with lots of talented colleagues.

Are there any digital printing projects that stand out from this year?

For one of our Managing Directors, Chris, the James Watt exhibition, Watt in the World, is a highlight and proved to be a great success story for us over the summer. The exhibition graphics were printed on bubble board – the recyclable print material.

This project reached the top three nominations in two categories at the Digital Printers Awards (Creative use of Substrates and Wide and Super Wide Format). Whilst we missed out on these awards, we have our fingers crossed for the FESPA awards in 2020, for which we have been shortlisted.

For Business Development Manager, James, the COINS exhibition graphics installed at The Lowry were a highlight. The job wasn’t straightforward as it involved liaising with multiple contacts both in the UK and the US to bring everything together. The project consisted of various printed graphics installed across multiple rooms within the venue and was a great success.

My highlight has been working with a major housing association in the UK on a multi-site rebrand. From concept to completion, we produced the exterior part of the project in a week without hitch. I’m looking forward to seeing what we produce on a mix of wallpapers, vinyls and acrylics, as we move on to the reception areas and office spaces of the 9 sites.

Back in May, we won a FESPA award for the graphics created for Club Energy Gym in Retford. We picked up a silver award in the Display and Packaging on Plastic category.

It’s always nice to get recognition for the work we’ve done for our wonderful clients! And seeing them up on the wall gives us great pride.

Have any of your products been particularly popular?

Bubble board has really taken off this year. It’s the recyclable material we’ve introduced to our clients as a greener alternative to other sign boards. But, on the whole, our clients purchase a mix of products, depending on the industry in which they operate and their work, every job is different!

You’ve made several new appointments this year. What have your new recruits brought to the business?

We’ve hired two new Business Development Managers – James and Darren – who have brought a fresh and proactive approach to helping customers find the products they need. It’s been fantastic to be able to work with so many new businesses this year.

Our account handling team also looks very different to 12 months ago. Lucy started 6 months ago and, more recently, Natalie, joined the business. Both have been welcome additions. They are great with our customers and full of energy!

Production Manager, Gareth, hired a new Zund digital cutter operator called Gabrielle, who is incredibly efficient at what she does and has settled in quickly.

In the project department, headed up by John, a new install crew have been hired on a full-time basis – Billy and Paul. These guys are great at what they do and our clients have warmed to them already, reporting back how professional and polite they are, as well as never leaving a mess behind!

For us, carrying projects through to installation is so important. It means we have control over how the graphics look in-situ and can always guarantee the quality of the completed job.

It’s also worth mentioning that we’ve had some roles change within our digital printing team. Martin is now a Senior Account Manager, taking responsibility for estimates. Josh has moved from the Zund machine to our studio and Andrew has moved from the studio into project management.

What does 2020 have in store? Is there anything you think might be big for the world of digital printing next year?

The conversation around greener materials and PVC free options will maintain momentum. We must keep discussing this with our clients as the marketplace starts to take more responsibility for its carbon footprint – and we’re keen to do whatever we can to help shape this shift.

Myself and Production Manager, Gareth, will be starting a project next year, looking at how we become greener ourselves, so we’re taking it very seriously!

How is the team celebrating the festive break?

We will be heading to Fazenda in Leeds for food and drinks, as we did last year. It was my first social event with the business last Christmas and it’s safe to say the Digital Plus team know how to let their hair down, and rightly so!

We’re open until Christmas Eve, hopefully finishing just after lunchtime. The last dispatch for overnight deliveries is Friday 20th and Monday 23rd for any same-day door-to-door deliveries. Thursday 2nd January will see us return to business at 8.30am.

The newest recruit to Digital Plus.

We’ve got a brilliant team here at Digital Plus, with a range of expertise to tap into. Because of this, we’re able to provide large format print that meets the requirement of a huge range of customers.

New to the team is Business Development Manager, James Vickerman. James will be working with new and existing customers, helping them access quality large format print that’s ideally suited to their project.

To introduce James properly, we sat down to ask him a few questions about his previous experience and initial impressions of working at Digital Plus…

Q: Tell us a bit about your role

A: I’m a Business Development Manager, which means I look after existing clients as well as dealing with incoming enquiries and actively seeking new businesses that need our help.

In terms of our clients, I’m a dedicated point of contact – someone they can consult and rely on when they need help with large format print. I keep clients up to speed on the best products and services, as well as making sure their overall experience is always a positive one.

I enjoy being out and about visiting new people and businesses and introducing them to Digital Plus. I’ve already had opportunities to help people with some really interesting and exciting projects.

Q: What’s your background?

A: I’ve spent my entire career in business development and account management. In my younger years, I could be found going door to door in Newcastle and Sunderland. I also spent time in Sydney working for a couple of major banks.

For the last 14 years, I worked at the Yorkshire Post looking after clients’ marketing and advertising needs, both in print and online. I had some great times at the Yorkshire Post and learnt a lot, but 2019 is time for a new challenge.

Q: Is this your first taste of the world of large format print?

A: In this format, yes. In my previous role, I helped clients to advertise their brand via magazine and newspaper print, whereas Digital Plus provide hundreds of different ways to share a message. The overall aim is often the same though – to gain brand awareness via printed materials.

Q: What’s been the biggest learning curve, so far?

A: Without a doubt, the majority of my learning is product knowledge. There’s a vast number of substrates to learn about, not to mention the different printing and installation processes.

Some jobs are relatively straightforward, whereas others are more challenging. I’ve learnt an awful lot in my first few months and every day I’m learning more. Thankfully, I have a wealth of experience to call upon, it’s just a matter of remembering it all!

Q: Does anything about the products or services Digital Plus offer especially interest you?

A: I particularly enjoy the variation that our products and services offer. It’s hard to single out one product in particular, but I’d have to say our Project Plus service.

We’re able to survey, design, print and install large scale graphics for exterior and interior settings. And we can turn boring and bland spaces into eye-catching pieces of art!

Q: How do you hope to make life easier for customers?

A: I want to be seen as the go-to person for our clients’ print needs. I have a great team to back me up, with decades of experience. I’ve already had all kinds of weird and wonderful problems to solve and someone in the team always has an idea of how we can make it work.

By fully managing enquiries from source to despatch I can make life easy for my customers. I’m a firm believer that in the fast-paced world of print, delivering on your promises is of particular importance.

Q: Tell us a little about what you like to do outside of work

A: I have quite a variety of interests and hobbies – I’m not one for lazy days! I enjoy spending time outdoors with my wife and two girls. I’m a match angler which sees me competing throughout Yorkshire and most Sunday’s you’ll find me on a river bank or lakeside!

I love watching horse racing and I’m partway through an adventure with my wife to visit all 60 horse racing venues in Great Britain. I play squash in a local squash league to keep fit and when I get a chance, I like to watch the footie. But that’s only after I’ve finished taxiing the kids everywhere!

We’re a busy lot at Digital Plus, bringing large format printing services to the people of Yorkshire and beyond. We produce and install a vast array of printed signs and graphics each week, with our team always on hand to make sure each project is spot on from concept to completion.

We’ve recently expanded our team to include brand new Sales Manager, David Brisk. David will be making sure our customers always receive the best possible service and the right signs and graphics for their site.

To introduce David properly, we sat down to ask him a few questions about how he’s settling in. Here’s what he had to say…

Q: What’s your background?

A: I’ve been in sales since the age of 16, from working retail jobs while at college to taking my first sales representative position at 20. Since then, I’ve worked in every function of sales at some point in my life. I’ve done telesales, field sales, new business, business retention, sales trainer, product trainer and sales manager running a team.

Q: What initially drew you to the role at Digital Plus?

A: I’d say the Managing Directors. They’re both very passionate about what they do and it had been some time since I’d felt that way. I also liked the idea of joining a growing company that isn’t a huge PLC, where it takes months to make any changes. If there’s a better way to engage with our customers or handle an internal process, I want to be able to implement that.

I wanted to be part of something, not just a number. And from my initial meeting with the team, I knew this was a business where I could grow and be proud of everything that left the production floor.

Q: Is this your first taste of the world of printing?

A: Of large format printing, yes. But I spent 7 years with The Yorkshire Post which has given me some understanding of the world of print.

I started as a sales representative and became the manager for the field based team covering the North & East of Yorkshire. Although the world of newsprint has moved into the digital space, The Yorkshire Post remains very strong in print and I owe much of my commercial knowledge to them.

Q: What are you excited to learn?

A: In terms of large format printing, probably the technical side; how we print; why we finish in a certain way; what different techniques are used; and how to get the best results.

Digital Plus print has the capacity to print onto over 50 different materials, on printers up to 3m wide. So, there’s definitely a lot to experience when it comes to the production of graphics. I’m into my third month now and I have soaked up so much information, every day I learn something new!

Q: What are you looking forward to most about the role?

A: I think the variety each day will be really interesting. One moment you’re on a site visit discussing external signage and window graphics, the next you’re talking to a client about exhibition panels for a large conference. It’s refreshing visiting different locations and talking to a range of clients about their unique requirements.

Q: What do you think will be your biggest challenge?

A: Learning all about the products, perhaps. Digital Plus offer such an extensive range of printed products, it would be impossible to know everything in such a short space of time. But the team here are knowledgeable and helpful, so it’s not been an issue.

Q: Which of Digital Plus’s services interests you the most?

A: I think our ability to offer a fully managed project service is fantastic.

Many clients come to us with an idea of what they want to achieve, but don’t quite know where to start. We can offer them a service which not only takes this hassle away, but helps them achieve something better than anticipated too. It’s a real point of difference for us.

Q: What are your first impressions?

A: All positive so far! Great set of people, great product quality and fantastic customer service. I’ve now managed to meet most of our regular customers and they all speak very highly of the service we provide. As a commercial lead, that’s a joy to hear.

Q: Tell us a little about what you like to do outside of work

A: Outside of work, life starts and ends with my family. My daughter is 3 years old and the centre of everything we do. That includes plenty of trips out, visits to parks and the normal parent stuff – I wouldn’t want it any other way! I’m trying to persuade my better half that we should start taking her to the Rugby at the moment… not sure I’m winning that conversation though!

Digital print with a close eye on quality

Here at Digital Plus, every piece of digital print we create has passed through the hands of several different trained experts before it reaches its end destination.

Why?

Well, it’s partly because applying a collaborative approach to production gets things done. But it’s also because each member of the team has a specialism and is responsible for ensuring their part of the process is executed accurately and effectively.

Our structured approach to production not only helps us to get through plenty of print each day, but it also means we maintain impeccably high standards. Essentially, everyone is accountable for ensuring the finished signs and graphics look the part, meet the original brief and are built to last.

One person who has a particularly important role to play in maintaining these standards is Luke Thirwall. Luke is our Finishing Supervisor and it’s his job to sign off the products we supply pre-delivery and installation.

He checks the content, quantity and finish to make sure the client is receiving exactly what they’ve requested. Noting everything down, Luke ensures the product is fit for purpose and progresses it onto the next stage where it is packed for delivery.

We can print in full colour onto over 50 different materials and have 9 professional machines for printing, cutting, mounting and laminating. These machines enable us to deal with new projects quickly and effectively, applying the best materials and techniques for the job at hand. Whether it’s a full interior re-fit or a one-off graphic panel, we apply the same production processes to get every job spot on.

In addition to our production studio, we have an upstairs office space including a small showroom containing hundreds of samples and examples. These give an idea of just how many different products we can produce and serve as a useful point of reference when recommending particular methods and materials to clients.

We are occasionally visited on-site by our clients, but the vast majority take advantage of our dedicated project management service and deal with an account manager. This makes it easy for businesses to call up or email over a new design whenever they receive it and their enquiry will be dealt with that same day.

Last time, we spoke to production manager, Gareth Hartley, about what goes into operating a successful large format digital print studio. This week, we chat to Martin Popplestone, to find out what he brings to his role as account manager.

I joined Digital Plus at the end of January 2015, so have been with the business a little over 3 years and 3 months. My role involves taking on client requests, offering expert advice and working with the production team to ensure projects are completed to the highest standard possible.

‘Clear, honest advice’

With almost 20 years’ industry experience under my belt, I’m no stranger to the world of large format digital print. And, as with any industry, practical experience is hugely valuable. It means I am able to advise clients on the best materials and print methods to be used to achieve their goal.

I think it’s important that printing companies provide clear, honest advice, rather than simply saying what the customer wants to hear. I always try and be practical in terms of what can be produced, whilst still achieving the clients’ goals within their budget.

‘Handling almost every job’

I get to handle almost every job that we produce at Digital Plus, which means I enjoy a varied role and get to see the full range of ideas that pass through our studio. I also deal directly with a handful of key clients from initial brief right through to production and delivery of the finished job.

All this gives me an insider’s perspective as to what kind of large format digital print projects are currently being achieved. This means, when a new client comes to me with a request, I am armed with plenty of information and real-life examples to help them develop their ideas.

‘Feeding back live, accurate updates’

A big part of my role is keeping projects running to deadline. I update clients on the progress of their orders and spend time ensuring each job is produced and delivered according to the agreed schedule. I work closely with the production manager to ensure I am feeding back live, accurate updates and any issues are resolved as quickly as possible.

I recently worked on a project to deliver free-standing bespoke display units to Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Sheffield. Constructed of glass and aluminium, the stands proved challenging due to the nature of the materials used and the environment they were to be used within.

‘Overcoming challenges’

As with any unique design, it took a fair amount of problem-solving to get right. Ensuring the glass complied with British Standards and sourcing a robust yet stylish aluminium base unit were just two of the challenges we faced during the process. However, the finished results were worth the effort and the client was over the moon with the end results.

‘Discussing the best methodology’

Aside from the satisfaction of doing a fantastic job for our clients, I also enjoy working in the relaxed yet professional environment we have here at Digital Plus. I am surrounded by colleagues who have an in-depth understanding of their industry, which makes it a really stimulating place to work.

We get the chance to engage in a bit of healthy discussion over the best methodology and learn new ideas and techniques from each other. It also means that, when challenges do arise, we work together to ensure a high-quality end result that leaves the client completely satisfied.

‘I wanted to challenge myself in a role producing work to a very high-standard’

I started at Digital Plus at the end of October 2015, having been at my previous employment in a similar role for over 13 years. I was seeking a fresh start and wanted to challenge myself in a managerial role working for a highly professional company.

I wanted to work with a digital printing company who produced exciting work and put quality at the heart of everything they achieved so, for me, Digital Plus was the perfect fit!

‘Quality control is one of the most important aspects of production’

In my role as Production Manager, I oversee all work that goes through the production process, from when an order is placed to when it’s despatched.

I spend my time making sure every deadline agreed with our clients is achieved. This involves maintaining stock levels so we have the right materials for each job and making sure every machine is maintained to a high standard.

Quality control is one of the most important aspects of my role and I oversee procedures to ensure they are followed correctly throughout the production process, on a daily basis. Part of this is encouraging a positive team spirit but still being able to enforce discipline where necessary. It’s a fine balance but I feel that if you get it right then the rest becomes a little easier!

‘We follow strict procedures at every stage production’

We always leave our clients satisfied with the end result of their projects and I believe this is as a result of the strict procedures we follow throughout the production process.

Every procedure we follow has been designed (and refined) around creating the best possible outcome for the client; be that by saving time and materials or delivering the highest quality finish.

We recently invested in two UV printers – an Agfa roll to roll and flatbed – which are backed up with two Oce UV flatbed printers. Not only do these machines help us do our work effectively, but they produce the outstanding quality results that our clients look for and value.

‘It was a challenging project for a worthy cause’

I would say that a highlight has been one of our most recent “The Gift of Life” projects which we installed at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital last September. The installation commemorates organ donation, so is a fantastic cause as well as being a challenging project from a production perspective.

In total, 100 butterflies were laser cut and printed both sides, before being individually hung in a climbing spiral. The finished structure was 1990mm wide and 2500mm long. The 1.2mm thick aluminium was coated in iridescent colour to give the material a shimmering effect, as well as strength and longevity in a hospital environment.

‘My greatest satisfaction at work is doing the best possible job for clients’

I’ve used various types of materials and adopted many different techniques over the years. But, honestly, the greatest satisfaction I get from my job is receiving positive feedback from our clients and ensuring they are pleased each and every time.
